Week 3 Assignment 2

Which ideas from the PPT reflect what the ELA teachers you interviewed are currently doing to integrate technology with their literacy instruction?

The teacher I interviewed frequently uses the SMARTboard for activities such as word study, and phonics games. Although this definitely enhances instruction and enages students, these activites do not teach students new literacies. They are not learning to identify questions, locate, evaluate, and synthesize information, and communicate with others. Unfortunately, these activites are not teaching students cognitive and technological skills.

How can you help change their instructional practices to include the use of technology and the Internet in their literacy and content-area curriculum?

There are so many ways to integrate technology in ELA instruction. Firstly, I'd make sure to incorporate the use of technology in my lesson plans and try to include it in ever lesson. I'd also create a class blog where students can answer questions about a reading selection posted by the teacher and respond to each other's comments. This teaches students great communication skills. Another thing I'd do is include Internet research projects. Students have to answer an open-ended question by researching Internet sources and collaborating with classmates. Students will learn to evaluate Internet sorces and comprehend information gathered from the Internet. I'd also have students complete various writing projects such as poetry voice threads and comics; they'll learn to write in many formats.

What professional development and/or resources will they need in order to make these changes?

The most important resorce Mrs. Schorr will need is available laptops. In order to integrate technology in all aspects of the curriculum, classrooms need to be supplied with enough laptops for all the students.  Professional development workshops would be beneficial as well. Teachers need to have the appreciation and know-how to effectively teach the new literacies.

What ideas do you have for grouping students so they will have equal access to technology in the classroom?

I think group arrangements need to vary in quantity and quality. I'd group students based on ability, sometimes grouping students with the same abilities and sometimes grouping students with various levels of ability. Additionally, at times I'd partner just two students, and sometimes I'd organize larger groups. I'd also designate a computer area in the classroom for independent work.
